Puerto Inirida is a fascinating Amazonia Colombian site features mostly excellent Varzea (seasonal flooded Forest) habitats but also White-sand Forest and savanas. This area has huge and very beautiful rivers like the Orinoco, Inirida, Guaviare and Atabapo. There are no lodges in this area, but there are good hotels and restaurants at Puerto Inirida town. Excellent habitats are just near town.

Itinerary

Flight Bogota –Puerto Inirida and Varzea Forest.

Leave Bogota at 9:00 am. Arrive to our hotel in Inirida town by near midleday. In the early afternoon we will have our first incursion on the Varzea or seasonal flooded forest where we can start with birds like: Orinoco Sofftail, Ringed and Cream-coloured Woodpeckers, Velvet-fronted Grackle, Orinoco Piculet, Rose-brested Chad, Spot-backed Antwren, Rusty- breasted Nunlet, Cherrie's Antwren, Yellow-crowned Manakin, Wire-tailed Manakin, Blackish-grey Antshrike, Spot-backed Antbird, Cocoa Thrush, Great Antshike, Long-billed

Woodcreper, Velvet-fronted Grackle, Slate-coloured Hawk, Red and green Macaw, Hoatzin, Paradise Jacamar, Golden spangled Piculet, Red-necked Woodpecker, Black-spotted Bare- eye, Bare-necked Fruitcrown, Amazonia Umbrella Bird. Night Fuente Guania Lodge.

White-sand forest at morning and Varzea afternoon

Very early we will visit a white sand forest habitat to look for the Capuchinbird, Yapacana Antbird, Rufous Tailed Flatbill, Citron-bellied Attila, Rufous-crested Elaenia, Pompador Cotinga, Imeri Antbird and others. As the white-sand forest trails is very quiet in the afternnon we might visit the Varzea habitat again on the afternoon.

Varzea and Mavecure Tepuis

Early morning at varzea Trails to try Orinoco Sofftail again and then take the boat 1.5 h tovisit the impressive Cerros Mavecure. On this area dominant habitat is the white sand forest. One of the most beautiful sites in Colombia. Here the Black-collar Swallows and Cliff Flycatcher are quite common. Night Fuente Guania Lodge

We will have 2 full days to work on wanted birds. If time permits it will be a half day excursion to the Orinoco river.

We had another great trip in Colombia, lots of new species photographed and lots of Colombia seen. It’s a wonderful country, I notice the improvements just in the last 3 years (2008-2010). More peaceful, less military, the hotels and food are getting better. All in all, what’s not to like? I’ll be back many more times.

Pablo has birded repeatedly at all the major birding locations in the country – and many of the minor ones also-. He speaks good English.  He has a great temperament for guiding, being polite and patient (with us), and also persistent (with the birds). He has all the key birds on his Ipod and is very knowledgeable about the vast majority of the birds, and especially about where to find them. Currently his prices are an incredible value, and our trip cost far less than any of my other guided trips in the Neotropics. Four of us joined Pablo on a 3.5 week tour. We were not disappointed.  A total of 50 endemics plus 13 antpittas seen and more lifers for all of us than we had expected.  The logistics were seamless, everything worked.
