Choco Lowlands


The Choco area hosts some of the highest biodiversity on the planet and is one of the wettest regions in the world. Some areas receive more than 12,000 mm of rainfall per year! Many range-restricted species are present, and can only be found here or in neighbouring Ecuador or Panama, but a number are also more widespread in Colombia. Until very recently, vast areas could not be visited safely. Now however there are some tourist centres, such as Bahia Solano, El Valle, Utria NP and Nuqui, where the government has invested resources to increase security in order to guarantee safety for visitors. In addition, the area is one of the most beautiful in Colombia, and it’s also where the majority of the lodges are located. The key endemics in the wider area are Sooty-capped Puffbird, Baudo Oropendola and Baudo Guan, but currently the Oropendola is the only one that is really possible to find at safe and easily accessible sites.

Here it’s possible to find: Baudo Oropendola, Choco Tinamou, Berlepsch’s Tinamou, Tawny-faced Quail, Brown Wood-Rail, Crested Eagle, Great Green Macaw,  Rose-faced Parrot,  Red-lored Parrot, Saffron-headed Parrot,  Crested Owl, Five-coloured Barbet,  White-tipped Sicklebill, Sapphire-throated Hummingbird, Yellow-eared Toucanet, Crimson-bellied Woodpecker, Spot-crowned Antvireo, Spotted, Ocellated, Dull-mantled and Stub-tailed Antbirds, Black-faced Antthrush, Thicket Antpitta,  Brownish Twistwing, Pacific Flatbill, Black-tipped Cotinga, Blue Cotinga, Red-capped Manakin, Yellow-browed Shrike-Vireo, Song Wren,  Stripe-throated Wren, Blue-whiskered Tanager, Rufous-winged Tanager, Scarlet-browed Tanager, Scarlet-and-white Tanager and many others
